Today I was bored so I flipped through all the channels on
my HDTV. Mostly they are sports programs on TV Saturday afternoon. NHL is in
the first round playoff right now; major league baseball is just starting its
first month of action; NBA is starting the first round of playoff; and so it
seems that there is always a golf tournament every other weekend, the Verizon
heritage is on.
Finally I settled on watching baseball. It was the Phillies vs the Mets. I know
it's difficult for a batter to get a hit against any big league pitcher,
because the ball they throw in the big league is usually 90+ mile per hour.
When the pitcher throws a pitch, the ball was traveling in the air, you can
only see a blur. One person impressed me is Mets' David Wright. He is this young
star player on the Mets, from his stats he's a very consistent hitter. I never
have a chance to see him play. Now I was able to watch closely how good he is.
It seems every at bat, he was able to hit the ball very well, and each at bat,
he was able to get a base hit. Either his team mate score and he got on base or
both. Although I don't watch baseball that much, but I have not see anybody
that can get hits so effortlessly like David Wright. The only other baseball
player is Barry Bonds, he was amazing because whenever I saw him he seemed to
hit a home run. Mets is going to be very good this season after watching a
couple innings, they have a very talented group of hitters and have a very
solid line of pitchers too. Barring injury, they will be a very good team.
I got bored watching baseball and I changed channel again. This time I saw the
visiting Pope Benedict in New York City. He was visiting the St. Joseph
Seminary. It's a small room and this old man in his 80s walks slowly inside the
room. He was greeted warmly by a small group of people (around 200+). I saw the
Pope on TV before and I did not like him that much because he has a very stern
looking face unlike the previous Pope. Previous Pope is more charismatic and
seems to always smile warmly. That is why you can say don't judge a book by its
cover. From his appearance, people tend to think he's a strict and serious
person that rarely smiles. From the moment he walks in, you can feel his
presence. A presence of kindness and love that is very tangible, even for a
non-religious but spiritual person like me. I used to think this Pope is a
stoned face old man that all the little kids would be afraid of. However I
totally got the wrong impression before. There are 50+ very sick kids line up
the aisle, where the Pope walks by and greeted each single one of the kid
individually. He smiled at the sick kid and put both his palms on his face,
touched gently, you could feel that he really do care about the kid and
genuinely praying in his mind, and asking God to make the kid feel better. Even
though he's 81 years old, and looks at times that he could not walk too well.
He took the time to tend to every sick kid in the aisle, touching every one of
them personally and it's a heartwarming scene. When kindness and love is true
and from the heart, you can absolutely feel it even if you are just watching on
TV. Cynical people would say it's all just a show for people. I totally
disagreed, something you could feel is not just a show, and it’s an act of
genuine care.
Two people impressed me today, one for his physical ability and gift, the other
his heart and compassion.
