I
just read this story in ESPN.com about the surprised underdog Davidson who
shocked the NCAA tournament by taking down the power house Georgetown. The
little school that could go a long way in the tournament. You could say they
are this year's Cinderella.
However there is no such thing as Cinderella as explained in the new commercial
jumpman. The commercial showed athletes keep practicing hard and keep pushing
themselves, when the clock strikes 12. There are no magical transformations
that turn Cinderella into this beautiful princess. The morale is clear, "there
is no Cinderella, become legendary". You are only going to be as good as
the effort you put into improving yourself.
The story goes that Davidson's coach put a big empty gallon jar in the locker
room. Every day when the coach feel like the player has made some improvement,
no matter how small, they put a penny into the jar. The big jar is starting to
fill up penny by penny. Slowly but surely the big jar is starting to get full.
You would need a lot of pennies to fill this gallon jar, that jar symbolizes
hard work and effort that improve the team little by little. Eventually all the
little things add up and the team slowly and quietly become better. Persistence
and determination pay off for the little school when they show a lot poise and
skill in pressured situation. Unfazed by a more physically gifted basketball
team, they just work their fundamentals (all these hours put in the gym to
correct little mistakes, try to make yourself just a little bit better every
day), it comes through for them. Their quiet confidence is like a fire you
can't put out, just keep burning whenever Georgetown tried to overpower them.
There is no Cinderella, Davidson is still there in the tournament because they
deserve it, and it’s not just a moment of magical transformation that makes
them better for one night only. It's all the little pennies pile up that filled
the jar.
